Digital media isn’t just digital.
Let’s be honest people, the world of media is booming and it’s something that plays a massive role in our everyday life. But no one really tells you what exactly is digital media? Yes, it is something where you can send funny memes to your friends, you can even show the world your TikTok videos (which I highly recommend that you don’t). Digital media, as stated by Business Dictionary, is “Digitized content (text, graphics, audio, and video) that can be transmitted over internet or computer networks”. Which means that digital media opens up new ways to communicate. It is a puzzle piece that fits into any industry in the world, no matter what language or culture, we can understand each other through digital media.
So we clarified what digital media is, but why is it so important?
Digital media is something that is heavily involved with our lives, whether you like it or not , it’s going to be there (unless you’re Tom Hanks on some remote island).
Media helps us see the world the way it is, it helps us create and reach people we never thought we could reach. With the world constantly growing and evolving, media is not far behind. Based off of WeAreSocial’s article, Digital in 2018: World’s Internet Users Pass the 4 Billion Mark:
- The number of internet users in 2018 is 4.021 billion, up 7 percent year-on-year
- The number of social media users in 2018 is 3.196 billion, up 13 percent year-on-year
- The number of mobile phone users in 2018 is 5.135 billion, up 4 percent year-on-year
That is a lot of people.
From sending funny cat videos to promoting an item or service through an ad for a business, digital media is constantly evolving. It is something that contorts itself to our needs as well as we contort ourselves to media. As people, we choose how we let it become involved with our lives.
